Sports and Recreation

Health and safety for sports and recreation areas is notoriously complex. Add to that the risks posed by COVID-19 and you will be keen to get your Health and safety procedures in place. The sector has recently published a framework and facilities opened sooner than was previously expected. Whatever stage you are at in your journey into health and safety, we can help as lockdown is loosened.

Common Health and Safety risk areas include:

Infection Control
Slips, Trips and Falls
Air and Water Quality

Leisure and sports businesses are legally required to protect the health and safety of their employees and anyone else that may be affected by their business activities, such as customers, contractors and members of the public. Business owners must have evidence that they have done everything, within reason, to protect these people and this will include identifying risks and controlling or eliminating them.

Whilst COVID-19 changes how we approach specific, existing hazards the basic principles don’t change so the approach we take depends on you and your circumstances.

The base legislation is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 which essentially requires a business employing more than 5 people to:

  1. Appoint a competent person to help you manage health and safety in your business

  2. Prepare a health and safety policy

  3. Identify hazards and assess risks at work

  4. Involve your workers and inform them about health and safety

  5. Tell your workers what their health and safety duties are

  6. Report accidents and illness

There are some specific laws that require compliance depending on the nature of your services and our advisors at John Green Health and Safety can help you navigate them efficiently and effectively, keeping your customers, employees and members of the public safe.
